About Us
The University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute serves as the umbrella organization under which diabetes prevention, education, treatment, and research are coordinated at UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh.
Since its inception, the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute has been successful in developing and implementing:
- the country’s largest diabetes registry for tracking and supporting patient statistics, which includes data representing different insurers and demographics
- the Diabetes Prevention Support Center, which provides diabetes prevention education and support to regional primary care physicians and other health care providers
- the Chronic Care Model for improved health care delivery
- twenty-six diabetes self-management education programs — one of the largest networks in the country — recognized for quality by the American Diabetes Association
- expansion of basic and clinical research programs in diabetes and metabolic disorders
- educational programs for physicians and other care givers in community practices
- initiatives to bring state-of-the-art diagnostic efforts and care to individuals in the community
- monitoring systems to improve diabetes care and outcomes
- community intervention, screening, education, and outcomes programs
- telemedicine tools, including an electronic diabetes medical record and a portal for patients
In addition, the Institute's partnerships with other organizations seek to enhance education and care on local and national levels.
